REASON FOR TRANSL: Population technically extinct, only males remained. Surviving birds transferred to predator free island while search conducted for additional surviving populations. CAPTURE METHOD: Birds located using muzzled dogs, and then caught by hand. (6) LENGTH OF TRANSPORT: Time varied from <6 to 24 hrs. (6) Birds (4) removed in 1982 to Little Barrier Island due to arrival of predator (stoat). (6) POPULATION STATUS: Population remained until 2003, when decision was made to translocated surviving birds to larger forested islands (10).
