Nov 15, 1996 / Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge / Trumpeter Swan
Twenty swans were released in November during the Utah swan hunting season to quantify whether trumpeter swans are more vulnerable to hunting than tundra
swans. These swans received white neck
collars to circumvent the confounding factor of hunters identifying trumpeter swans by the presence of conspicuous neck collars. Nine of the swans were soft-released to allow them to acclimatize to the new surroundings, whereas 11 swans were directly released into the new area (hard-released). 31 swans (17 November-released and 14 December-released) received radio collars that were either attached to their neck collars or to their back feathers. The Utah trumpeter swan translocation program is not a success story because the translocation failed to achieve the goal of encouraging dispersal of trumpeter swans to southern wintering grounds. No Utah-released trumpeter swans returned during the subsequent 2
years.
