Notes: |
PURPOSE: Teach puppet-reared sandhill cranes to migrate following ultralights w/o getting too used to humans. Cranes were trucked for most of the migration route, and only flew the last 108 km. Surrogate study for whooping cranes. RELEASE DATE: last day of migration.
PRE-RELEASE TRAINING: Nearly from hatching, were taught to accept engine noise. Also taught to roost in water (reduces predation)
