Iiwi is surrogate for `Akohekohe. SELECTION CRITERIA: Only birds able to maintain stable body weight in brief captivity period & w/ clear medical tests were deemed suitable for release. ACCLIMATIZATION: 9 birds were released after 1 hr, 6 after 7 days, to test for hard vs. soft release. SUPPLEMENTAL FEEDING: Only for soft- released birds. SURVIVAL: Transmitters only worked for 6-41 days and no birds were re-sighted just by color bands. NOTE: 3 birds died in captivity before release, so soft-release is not advised.
