Mar 14, 2008 / Kaikoura Peninsula / Hutton's shearwater
60 chicks were transferred from Kowhai colony in helicopter on March 5, remaining 40 chicks were transferred on March 6.
Gates were placed outside entrance of each burrow to prevent chicks from entering tunnel. They were removed on the 4th or 5th day after March 5-6th. The first chick to be released was 4 nights after the gates were removed. It is assumed that this is 4 days from March 10 (i.e. the 14th). However, it still could be March 12 or 13th when the first chick fledged.
2 birds died - one of predation and another from natural causes.
8 abandoned chicks were donated to the Department of Conservation in addition to the 100 translocated chicks. One was euthanized, and another died for unknown reasons. The remaining 6 (75%) are presumed to have fledged successfully.
